Chemical Discharge Suspected in Major Fish Kill
More than ten tonnes of fish have died at Raa Cheruvu, a lake in the Boduppal Circle of the Medchal constituency, after chemicals were released into the water overnight, with residents discovering the scale of the kill the following morning.
Suspected Source Near Mallapur Industrial Area
Vangari Saikumar, spokesperson of the Jana Sena Party, told HyderabadMail that the discharge likely happened around midnight and is suspected to have come from a factory near the lake connected to the Mallapur industrial area. By morning, the surface of the lake was covered with dead fish, many weighing two to three kilograms, with the total loss estimated at between ten and fifteen tonnes.
Impact on Local Fishers
The kill has hit fishers who depend on the lake for their livelihood. According to Saikumar, buyers from Ramnagar Market had visited the lake multiple times earlier in the month and taken away tonnes of fish. The remaining stock has now been wiped out, raising doubts over whether fishing at the lake can continue.
Residents Face Stench and Silence From Authorities
The smell from the decaying fish has made daily life difficult for residents in surrounding areas, including along the road from Chilkanagar to Boduppal where the lake is locally known as Raa Cheruvu. Residents said no government agency has yet responded or acknowledged the extent of the damage.
Call for Investigation and Compensation
Saikumar has called on the state government to order a full investigation into the source of the chemicals, take action against those responsible, and provide compensation to the affected fishers whose primary income was lost overnight. He has also posted photographs of the dead fish on social media to draw attention to the situation.
