Assam police arrested around 330 people across the state on Saturday in a coordinated operation targeting fraudsters and impersonators who cheated people through calls and messages. Director General of Police Harmeet Singh said the arrests were made since early morning following directives from Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking at Police Headquarters, Singh said investigators had been analyzing individuals involved in multiple types of fraud, including promising to settle police cases in exchange for money, impersonating police officers and advocates, and threatening victims over the phone to extract payments. “Many of them used to loiter near police stations and trap people coming for registration of their complaints with the assurance of fast-tracking them and getting their work done without any hassle,” Singh said. Some of those arrested were also dealing in stolen goods, he added. Most arrests were made in Cachar district. Singh said arrests were carried out in every district except Sadiya and Majuli.
Investigation and Technical Analysis
He explained that technical analysis of intelligence was followed by ground verification to confirm identities, noting that some fraudsters used phone numbers registered under other people’s names. Singh said eight to ten individuals have been traced outside Assam, including in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and police expect to take them into custody soon. “Our aim is to ensure that the general public is not harassed by such frauds. Investigations into all cases are going on, and legal procedure will follow,” he said.
