Cognichip Launches AI Platform to Shrink Chip Design From Months to Days

Cognichip is betting that hardware engineers shouldn’t have to wait months to see their chip designs come to life. The startup today launched ACI Enterprise, a full-stack intelligence platform designed to compress lengthy semiconductor design cycles into a matter of days.

The company has secured $93 million in funding from Lux Capital, Mayfield Fund, and FPV Ventures to pursue that goal. But CEO Faraj Aalaei argues this isn’t another wrapper around general-purpose language models. “General-purpose models lack the mathematical precision and physical awareness required for hardware engineering,” Aalaei said. Cognichip instead built proprietary, physics-informed foundation models trained on governance-vetted, IP-clean semiconductor data.

The timing reflects a structural pressure facing the industry. Advanced-node tape-outs now cost between $40 million and $100 million. The sector also faces a projected shortfall of more than one million skilled chip designers by 2030. Meanwhile, engineering teams spend up to 95% of their time on execution tasks, leaving little capacity for actual innovation.

Cognichip points to a benchmark conducted with a top-20 fabless semiconductor firm. According to the company, a single engineer using ACI Enterprise processed a 55-page specification, taking an advanced ASIC from micro-architecture and RTL design through functional verification and PPA optimization in a few days. That same workload typically requires an entire front-end team and four to five months.

Architecture and Deployment

Several architectural choices support that workflow. The platform’s physics-informed models bake domain logic directly into the base models rather than handling it through external agentic wrappers, which Cognichip says maintains mathematical convergence and accuracy. Specifications, RTL, constraints, and test benches exist within a single evolving model, allowing engineers to revise foundational decisions late in the cycle without restarting. Enterprise “alpha,” the core architectural IP, stays behind the customer’s firewall with SOC 2 Type II isolation, keeping proprietary design logic out of public training sets.

Cognichip is already operating across more than 40 engagements, with early endorsements from Renesas, SiTime, and Altera. Tailored workflows for the Altera FPGA ecosystem let developers move edge and autonomous silicon concepts from specification to working bits at software-like speeds, according to the company.
