XPENG’s IRON humanoid robot autonomously walked off the production line at the company’s Guangzhou facility on September 8th, marking what the automaker calls the world’s first high-level, general-purpose humanoid robot to be manufactured and walked off a production line without human assistance or remote control.
Autonomous Production Milestone
Unlike many robot demonstrations—including recent displays at IFA Berlin—that rely on remote control or pre-programmed sequences, IRON operates independently from the moment it leaves the assembly line. The robot is built using mass production automotive-grade quality control and precision robotics manufacturing, with automation exceeding 80 percent.
Manufacturing and Supply Chain
More than 85 percent of IRON‘s supply chain overlaps with XPENG‘s electric vehicle business, a synergy the company says helps control costs while maintaining quality standards. Three in-house developed Turing AI chips provide 2,250 TOPS of combined computing power—the same level found in XPENG’s Ultra trim vehicles running the VLA 2.0 intelligent driving system. This onboard processing enables on-device deployment of the physical-world foundation model with low latency inference and improved data security.
“The robot production lines were created from scratch with no precedent to follow,” said He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of XPENG. “Today’s step is small, but XPENG is building the production lines for an entirely new product category. Looking ahead, XPENG will continue to explore faster production rhythms and greater scale in robot manufacturing, charting a new path toward a leading robot manufacturing industry in China and globally.”
XPENG claims it is the only robotics company in China with a fully in-house, end-to-end technology stack covering the AI model, data infrastructure, computing power, robot body, and manufacturing system. “Only by going deep across every layer can we build something truly different,” He added.
Physical Specifications and Features
IRON stands 173 centimeters tall and weighs 65 kilograms. The robot features 76 degrees of freedom across its body, with 21 degrees in each hand. A bio-inspired spinal structure in the waist enables human-like movement. The robot supports Chinese and English bilingual interaction with smooth conversational switching between languages, and includes full-process autonomous obstacle avoidance allowing it to receive instructions, plan routes, and navigate intelligently while avoiding obstacles in complex environments. A soft mesh under the fabric skin provides collision protection while maintaining a more human-like appearance.
The robot also handles its own charging, plugging and unplugging connectors, locating charging stations, and maintaining stable operation even during minor equipment faults.
Funding and Commercialization
XPENG’s robotics division recently raised more than $900 million in a single funding round at a post-money valuation exceeding $6.3 billion—the largest single-round private financing ever recorded in China’s embodied AI industry. The capital is earmarked for ramping up production and commercialization.
Initial deployment will focus on XPENG showrooms and campuses to support sales operations and provide tours. Based on data from that rollout, additional in-house scenarios will be deployed in the fourth quarter of 2026. External customer deliveries in China and overseas markets are slated to begin in 2027, initially targeting the retail and service industries before expanding to commercial, industrial, and eventually home environments.
Market Position and Financial Outlook
XPENG generated a 20.7 percent gross margin last quarter, outpacing Tesla‘s 16.8 percent. The company expects gross margins for humanoid robots to exceed those of its electric vehicles as production scales and commercialization accelerates.

With the rollout of what XPENG calls the first advanced general-purpose humanoid robot and activated production lines, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of humanoid robotics as part of its broader physical AI strategy—a development that could reshape how people interact with technology at work, at home, and in daily life.
